How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture works with energy pathways, called meridians. These pathways allow energy to flow, much like an electrical system allows electricity to move through a house. We can think of the meridians as an electrical system that supplies our body with energy, light, and warmth. Traditional Chinese Medicine calls this qi. Illness and imbalance occur when our pathways are blocked and parts of our system are not receiving the qi they need.

The electrical current in a house cannot be seen, but it can be felt. And the same is true for the energies that flow through the body’s meridians. Acupuncture points along the meridians provide a connection to internal organs, muscles, and all physiological functions. And these points carry a low-level electrical charge that can be felt and measured.

When the energy current moving through our pathways decreases due to illness or stress, the acupuncture points can be used to open the flow and boost the qi. The result is a revitalization of our overall health and vitality, and a return to optimal functioning.

As an Acupuncturist, Dr, Lisa’s first job is to diagnosis the blockages in the body and choose the points along the meridians that will open and renew the flow of energy. She then places the thin, sterile acupuncture needles in the specific points that her diagnosis indicates will be most effective. The needles are a means to access the body’s internal physiological processes safely and painlessly.

What conditions can Acupuncture treat?

The World Health Organization recognizes over 100 conditions that can be effectively treated with Acupuncture therapy. The list includes various types of chronic and acute pain, along with many internal conditions that relate to immune function, digestive health, gynecological issues, musculoskeletal and neurological disorders, sleep problems, and more.

In her Acupuncture practice, Dr. Wilson focusses on treating the person, not just the disease. Whatever the health challenge is, her foremost concern is the patient as a whole, and his/her overall state of health.

By working with the body as a balanced, integrated, unified system, any number of concerns and conditions can be treated simultaneously. In addition to improvement of specific conditions, most patients report an overall increase in energy and vitality, along with an enhanced sense of balance and well-being.

Each element corresponds to specific physiological functions, seasons, life cycles, emotional patterns, spiritual transformations and specific personality traits. By getting to know the health of each of the elements within ourselves, we can better understand our own strengths and weaknesses, and use this information to guide our personal evolution towards better health and increased clarity.

The five element framework provides a template for discerning how to understand and respond to your body’s unique needs for balance. In Taoist thought, cultivating awareness of these five cycles of growth and development gives us an opportunity to move with the natural creative flow of life.

Five element theory began by observing the inter-relationship of patterns in nature, realizing that the human body is but a microcosm of the natural environment which supports and sustains us. Just as different climates and environments have their own unique attributes, individuals have their own unique health and personality traits as well.

The nature of a particular environment tells us a lot about how it will respond to change. A thunderstorm in the hot dry desert will have a very different affect than a similar amount of rainfall in an equatorial rain forrest. Similarly, illnesses may be identical, but each person’s response to them will vary according to their elemental nature.

Techniques for balancing one’s Elemental Nature include:

  • Acupuncture
  • Seasonal rebalancing through diet and lifestyle
  • Qi Gong practice
  • Mindfulness practices for each element
  • A Five Element assessment for personal growth and transformation

Lisa has been my mentor and teacher for over twelve years. She has taught me to envision my life through a more expansive context, creating a deeper connection to myself and the world in which I live.

Chinese Herbal Therapy

Chinese herbs provide a powerful adjunctive support to treatments. Used short term, herbal formulas can hasten recovery from acute conditions while supplemental formulas build and balance the body to relieve chronic conditions. Herbal formulas are prescribed after extensive attention on the individual’s situation, including consideration of allergies, sensitivities, and possible interactions with other supplements or medications. All Chinese herbal formulas are approved by the FDA, and are monitored for safe manufacturing practices. The formulas are in easy-to-take tablet or powder form.

BENEFITS:

  • Support your body’s ability to maintain health and vitality
  • Experience increased energy, immunity, hormonal balance, and decreased anxiety
  • Adjunctive support during recovery from surgery, chemotherapy, and other medical procedures
  • Safe and gentle treatment for difficult to treat conditions
  • Learn how to create a home pharmacy of herbal remedies for the entire family

I am being treated by Dr. Wilson for an immune reactive disease as well as for the side effects of  medications prescribed to keep this disease at bay. When I first saw Dr. Wilson I was using antibiotics many times a year. In the last year I haven’t needed to take antibiotics and my liver and kidneys are functioning normally. Thank you Dr. Wilson for your thoughtful and mindful care.
