What is emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence, also referred to as emotional literacy, is the ability to recognize, understand and manage our emotions, and to recognize, understand and respect the emotions of others. Unlike IQ (intelligence quotient), EQ (emotional intelligence) is a skill that we can increase through intention and practice. Mindfulness gives us the tools to slow down and listen before we respond. Emotional intelligence gives us the tools to blend thinking and feeling to create optimal outcomes for ourselves and others.

Why is emotional intelligence important?

Emotional intelligence contributes to better physical health.

Chronic exposure to stress, anxiety and negative moods can affect physical health. People with lower emotional intelligence levels can have a higher risk of chronic inflammatory conditions, depression and anxiety disorders. Mindfulness and emotional intelligence practices have been found to lower cortisol levels and overall inflammatory responses in the body.

Emotional intelligence contributes to better psychological health.

When emotions run high, they change the way our brains function, diminishing our cognitive abilities, decision-making powers and even interpersonal skills. Understanding and managing our emotions (and the emotions of others) helps increase our personal and professional success.

At a personal level, emotional intelligence helps us:

  • have challenging conversations without hurting feelings
  • manage our emotions when stressed or feeling overwhelmed
  • improve relationships with the people we care about

At work, emotional intelligence helps:

  • resolve conflicts
  • create a culture of collaboration and diversity
  • build psychological safety within teams
